The purpose of this Workshop is to discuss global progress on the taxonomy, ecology and evolution of the oomycetes Phytophthora,Pythium and related genera.
Phytophthora and Pythium are fungus-like genera in the new kingdom Straminipila. The genus Phytophthora consists of more than 80 species and harbors a group of important plant pathogens, including historically devastating species such as P. cinnamomi, P. infestans and P. ramorum. Interest in the taxonomy of Phytophthora has increased exponentially in the last five years with advances in powerful molecular techniques and phylogenetics, the integration of morphological and molecular methods, and the increase in survey efforts in different regions of the world, particularly in Australia, Europe and North America.Several novel species of Phytophthora have recently been discovered and described, including species of hybrid origin. The genus Pythium consists of more than 150 species and represents an ecologically, physiologically and pathologically exceptional group of straminipiles, with worldwide distribution and extreme levels of niche diversity unsurpassed by any other straminipile or fungus.Morphological and molecular taxonomy within the genus Pythium has greatly evolved within the last five years as well.Numerous new species have been described, and data has been generated that warrants the split of the genus into three more adequate genera nominations. The proliferation of newly described species in Phytophthora, Pythium and related genera is indicative of our limited understanding of the diversity and dynamics of these organisms in various ecosystems. This Workshop will include presentations from keynot speakers and contributions of international scientists to the systematics and evolution of Phytophthora, Pythium and related genera based on biology, morphology, ecology and molecular data.

The 3rd International Phytophthora/Pythium Workshop includes the participation of invited speakers, offered oral and posters presentations, as well as scientists interested in the topics programmed for the event. |
Special Session: Hands-off training on morphological and molecular identification of Phytophthora, Pythium and related genera. |
We are going to follow the ICPP meeting format for abstracts see abstracts' layout/example and posters. Presentations made at the ICPP meeting may be repeated at the workshop. Invited speakers are welcome to submit abstracts for sessions outside the scope of their invited presentations.
Prospective authors are first invited to submit abstracts to the Workshop Chair (Dr. Gloria Abad: Gloria.Abad@aphis.usda.gov) and Co-chairs (PhD David Cooke: dcooke@scri.ac.uk – PhD Frank Martin: fmartin@pw.ars.usda.gov) for oral presentation in any of the following subject areas:
Morphological and molecular taxonomic methods |
Ecology, biogeography, and epidemiology |
Nomenclature of present taxa and putative new species |
Systematics and phylogenetics |
Evolution and Population genetics |
Integrating morphological and molecular tools for a unified phylogeny and classification |
Call for Papers Submission of Abstracts and Papers:
Prospective authors are invited to submit abstracts in any of the subject areas listed in the program outline.
Please indicate if you are interested in giving an oral presentation as the program committee will review these abstracts and select several for oral presentations to round out the subject matter presented at the workshop (the balance of the abstracts will be presented as posters). The contact author of each submission will be notified of acceptance by email. Upon acceptance as an oral presenter, authors will be required to submit written papers for publication in the proceedings. Authors of posters that would like to submit written papers are welcome. All papers must be written in English, with the length not exceeding 5,000 words or 10 pages (including figures and tables). The paper must be carefully checked for grammar and spelling. Papers must include: the title, author(s), affiliation(s), contact details, a list of keywords, abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, and a list of references. To avoid lost papers, an email must be sent to the workshop chair Gloria Abad (Gloria.Abad@aphis.usda.gov) and co-chairs David Cooke (dcooke@scri.ac.uk) and Frank Martin (fmartin@pw.ars.usda.gov) including: category of paper, title, authors' affiliation, and an abstract of the paper submitted.
All abstracts and accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings that will be available at the time of the workshop.
Registration Information:
At least one author of an accepted paper must be registered for the workshop. The cost of the workshop is Euros 250 per person – this includes coffee breaks and light lunch.
Please register through the ICPP 2008 Registration Form (see Pre-Congress Workshops).
If registration fees are not received by January 15, 2008, the corresponding paper will not be published in the workshop proceedings. Registration by this date is required by the ICPP.
